Alma Cottage

Access Statement

Alma Cottage is located in the main street of a village some six miles from Ripon. There is a good bus service to Ripon from nearby towns and cities, but bus services to the village itself are infrequent. A taxi service operates from the village. For those arriving by car or cycle, access to the property is directly from the street, where there is no parking restriction, or from the back lane, where there is a lock-up garage and hard standing for cars.

The front door of the cottage opens from the street pavement, with a small step approximately 10 cm in height. Access from the rear is via a wooden gate leading to a stone path which slopes down to the back door of the cottage, where a small step of approximately 3 cm gives entry to the kitchen. To the left of the kitchen a utility room gives access to a downstairs toilet and wash-basin.

From the front entrance, 10 carpeted stone stairs lead upstairs. The stairs vary in width from 89 to 77 cm wide, and are about 19 cm high. There is a sturdy wooden handrail on the right-hand side. From the landing, a further step 17 cm high leads into the bathroom. There is a step 17 cm high up to the walk-in shower. The bathroom also contains a large corner bath, a toilet, a wash-basin and a bidet.

Two steps about 16 cm high lead to the double bedroom, where the bed is slightly higher than usual at 62cm. A ceiling beam on the landing at a height of 166 cm means that some people need to lower their heads when leaving the bedroom. One of the twin rooms has a 19 cm step up to it; the other has level access. Twin bed heights are 52 cm.

The cottage is equipped for six people, with the possible addition of a child in a cot, which is provided if needed, as are stair gates for toddlers. There is a double sofa-bed in the living room which, with the help of the downstairs toilet, can be used if guests would rather not climb the stairs too often.

The amenities nearby in the village include a butcher's shop across the road, a general store 100 metres away, a garage, a mobile post office, two pubs with food, a fish and chip shop and a tea shop, all within easy reach.
